Rich Eberlen's Cigar Box Stoessel Lute

Just when I think I've seen just about every incarnation of cigar box instruments, Rich Eberlen shows up with his Cigar Box Stoessel Lute.  According to the info on his website, The Fretboard Explorer, the hybrid-style lute/zither instrument style dates back to 1914.

In the video below, Eberlen puts the instrument through its paces with a fantastic blues shuffle.  Notice how the fretting hand reaches over the headstock area.   (Eberlen is an inventor who has also created The Harp Rail, a harp guitar conversion kit.)

Amazing instrument! Great riff. Keep up the strange work.

  • I want to thank Shane for alerting me to this. I never heard of this before (shame on me, I'm a musicologist) so must build one. I will share it on Cigar Box Nation when completed. I plan to use CB Gitty parts as much as possible.

Make sure you let me know about your Stoessel build. I'd like to learn more about making one. -Shane
